The children of Solaga: Indigenous belonging across the U.S.-Mexico border
In this book, Daina Sanchez examines how Indigenous Oaxacan youth form racial, ethnic, community, and national identities away from their ancestral homeland. Assumptions that Indigenous peoples have disappeared altogether, or that Indigenous identities are fixed, persist in the popular imagination. This is far from the truth. Sanchez demonstrates how Indigenous immigrants continually remake their identities and ties to their homelands while navigating racial and social institutions in the U.S. and Latin America, and, in doing so, transform notions of Indigeneity and push the boundaries of Latinidad. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork between Los Angeles, California and San Andrés Solaga, a Zapotec town in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, The Children of Solaga centers Indigenous ways of knowing and being in the world, and adds a much-needed transnational dimension to the study of Indigenous immigrant adaptation and assimilation. Sanchez, herself a diasporic Solagueña, argues that the lived experiences of Indigenous immigrants offer a unique vantage point from which to see how migration across settler-borders transforms processes of self-making among displaced Indigenous people. Rather than accept attempts by both Mexico and the U.S. to erase their Indigenous identities or give in to anti-Indigenous and anti-immigrant prejudice, Oaxacan immigrants and their children defiantly celebrate their Indigenous identities through practices of el goce comunal ("communal joy") in their new homes.
Digital Indigenous cultural heritage
The digitising of Indigenous cultural heritage (CH) is not often debated in international research. A topical gap in research-based knowledge on the legal and ethical practices of various fields of Indigenous CH exists, for example, regarding digitisation, education, law, social processes, and creative practices. This anthology results from a project aimed at juxtaposing southern and northern perspectives on sustainable practices for digitising indigenous CH. The book seeks to raise awareness, thoroughly discuss the digitisation of CH from a multidisciplinary perspective, and, in this way, disseminate research findings that elaborate on the topic of creating trust in digitising Indigenous CH. The objective is to provide a holistic understanding of key challenges and propose potential novel, workable, substantive, and methodological solutions via which to navigate the legal and cultural tensions within the processes of digitising Indigenous CH in ethical ways.
An epistemology of belongingness: Dreaming a First Nation’s ontology of hope
The intent of this book focuses on Australia's First Nations truth, voice, recognition, diversity, and respect. Hope O'Chin explains that knowledge about Australian First Nations culture and learning can be seen through new conceptual lens, which she refers to as an Ontology of Dreaming Hope for Australians. The book proposes to move from ontological propositions embedded in pedagogies and methodologies that center on the relevance of Indigenous epistemes and ways of doing. O'Chin offers a conceptual framing for engaging with Indigenous peoples, and forming communities of belongingness and relationality. She offers suggestions for ways in which art and education can act as 'healing' and a way forward towards a more inclusive civil society. Reflexive practice, ethnographic principles, and action research is described in a way that methodologies provide an understanding of a sense of Belonging. O'Chin argues that theoretical research, art, and educational practice can addto the value of determining a strategy of Indigenous art investment within Australia, and to address how art and education can be used to validate contemporary expression of Aboriginality within contemporary Australian society. Ultimately, the book is about Indigenous strengths and what Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing can offer, and how one might go about honouring and working in this way respectfully.
Indigenous autoethnography: Illuminating Maori voices
This book opens new pathways for decolonial autoethnography, presented as a series of reflective stories that showcase how Māori have negotiated and navigated their personal and professional identities within contemporary society. Indigenous journeys, transatlantic perspectives: Relational worlds in contemporary Native American literature
Writing from a vantage point that respects tribal specificities and Indigenous sovereignty, the essays in this volume consider the relational place-worlds crafted by the Native American authors Louise Erdrich, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Gordon Henry Jr., Louis Owens, James Welch, Heid E. Erdrich, Ofelia Zepeda, and Simon J. Ortiz. Each is set in conversation with kindred writers and larger sociopolitical debates in the Americas, Africa, and Europe. The shared aim is to decolonize academic methodologies and disciplines across the Atlantic by tracing the creative, spiritual, and intellectual networks that Native writers have established with other communities at home and around the world.
The Maya forest waterlands: Shared conservation, entangled politics, and fluid borders
This book examines the entanglements and blurred edges of nature conservation and geopolitical relations in the borderlands of the tri-national Maya Forest. Maya Forest is an umbrella term for transboundary conservation developed by scientists and conservationists in the 1990s to protect the threatened rainforest in the borderlands of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Currently, the Maya Forest is a biodiversity hotspot composed of a network of protected areas and heritage sites, however, issues related to water, land and forests have often been treated as separate political units, and not as part of the same history. Written by two authors with decades of hands-on experience in this region, this book sheds light on the complex dynamics by which conservation and natural resource management geopolitically shape borderlands such as the Maya Forest. The book introduces the novel concept of forest waterlands as borderlands and fluid edges that are now subject to concern by conservationists. These are entangled spaces in which conservation, peoples and politics interact, connect, and disconnect with the nexus of waters, forests, and lands. The book sheds light on the building and mapping of the Maya Forest eco-region, with particular attention to water as an often neglected, but unifying element. It showcases how the Maya Forest is a distinct region characterized by transformations entangled with the Maya, trails of biological stations, the shared history of chicleros (chewing-gum hunters), fluid international rivers and transboundary basins, and various geopolitical discrepancies. It offers a contemporary glimpse into the Maya Forest's intertwined bio and geopolitics, which urge us to rethink borders and boundaries. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of nature conservation, global environmental politics, geopolitics, borderlands, international relations and natural resource management.
Native foods: Agriculture, indigeneity, and settler colonialism in American history
In Native Foods: Agriculture, Indigeneity, and Settler Colonialism in American History, Michael D. Wise confronts four common myths about Indigenous food history: that most Native communities did not practice agriculture; that Native people were primarily hunters; that Native people were usually hungry; and that Native people never developed taste or cuisine. Wise argues that colonial expectations of food and agriculture have long structured ways of seeing (and of not seeing) Native land and labor. Combining original historical research with interdisciplinary perspectives and informed by the work of Indigenous food sovereignty advocates and activists, this study sheds new light on the historical roles of Native American cuisine in American history and the significance of ongoing colonial processes in present-day discussions about the place of Native foods and Native history in our evolving worlds of taste, justice, and politics.
