Locating a book on the library shelves

Broome Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system to organize our print materials. You can locate our physical books using the call number assigned to the item but reading these numbers can be confusing in the beginning. Review the guide below to understand how to read

Finding a Call Number

Call numbers are usually located on the spine of a book.

Anatomy of a LC Call Number

The first two lines describe the subject of the book, the third line the author, and the fourth line the publication date.

  • 1st line:  Read the first letters alphabetically. For example, K comes before KF, which comes before KFD.
  • 2nd line:  Read the first numbers as a whole number (1, 2, 30, 456, 7150)
  • 3rd line:  Read the numbers as a decimal. For example, .33 comes before .813, which comes before .9.
  • 4th line:  Read as a whole number (it's a publication year).
