Every Californian with an email address and an internet connection can access more than 300,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks in California's Bookshelf. California's Bookshelf uses the Palace Project app to provide access to digital content.
Follow these 5 steps to create a virtual library card:
1. Download the Palace Project app on your iOS or Android device.
2. Open the app, and use the “find my library” search to find “California’s Bookshelf.”
3. Browse the collection until you find a desired title, then either “get” or “reserve” that book.
4. Choose the option to create a virtual card and then include a valid email address and a password in the form. You will need to enable the app’s permission to use your specific location, just one time, for the creation of your library card.
5. You'll be sent a link to verify your email, with your new library card number. You can borrow items using that number and your chosen password.
The entire process takes just a minute or two. California's Bookshelf includes fiction, nonfiction, juvenile literature, libros en espanol, in both ebook and audiobook format. Thanks California State Library!
It can be helpful to browse directly in large ebook databases. The most popular ebook databases are listed below by the size of the collection, with notes on their general scope and usability. A complete list of ebook databases provided by the library can be found here.
There are many free, Open Access ebook collections available to the public; often these collections have older books that are part of public domain. See also California's Bookshelf, a publicly accessible ebook/audiobook library detailed elsewhere on this page.
