Citation Style Guide

A introductory guide to citation styles and reference management tools.

What is EndNote?

EndNote Web is a free reference management software, which can: collect and organize your sources, store pdfs of your sources (allows you to highlight and take notes), and insert formatted citations and bibliographies into documents.

Where to Start

Create an Account

Unlike the other reference management tools described in this guide, CSUCI has a subscription to EndNote Web. This means it's best to create and account and login to the software through the library database link. Follow the steps below to create an account.

  1. Go to the library homepage and select the Database A-Z link.
  2. Find and select the EndNote Web link in the databases list. You can do this by searching EndNote in the upper right-hand part of the screen or by scrolling down the list to the 'E' databases.
  3. You will be brought to the EndNote Web login screen. From here you can either login into your account or you can register (or create) an account.

Additional EndNote Web Tools

Unlike Zotero and Mendeley, EndNote Web does not have a free desktop software to download but the web-based software has many helpful plugins and tools to help you with your research. Once you have created an account, login and then click the download tab to download the available plugins (if desired):

  • Cite While You Write: A tool that allows you to insert formatted references into Microsoft Word.
  • Capture: Imports citation information from your browser into your EndNote library.
  • EndNote Click: Imports full-text PDFs from your browser into your EndNote library.
