Citation Style Guide

A introductory guide to citation styles and reference management tools.

What Are Reference Management Tools?

Citation management tools are an amazing resource to help you throughout the research and writing process. They can :

  • Keep all your sources with accompanying citation information in one place.
  • Store pdfs of your sources, allowing you to take notes and highlight the documents (varies by software).
  • Access your citation library anywhere there is internet.
  • Insert and format citations into your Word documents with Cite While You Write tools.

These tools can save you a lot of time and stress. However, these tools are not perfect and you should always balance their use with an understanding of the citation style you are using. You will always need to double check that the citations that you insert into your papers are formatted correctly.

To navigate this page, use the drop down menu to the left to review specific FREE citation management tools covered: Mendeley, Zotero, and EndNote Online.
